Description

The Norwegian Sailing Pram is a compact 11'9" wooden dinghy inspired by traditional Scandinavian small-boat heritage. Designed in 1989 by Simon Watts, this lively and versatile pram combines a stable, beamy hull with a simple sailing rig, making it well suited for beginners, youth sailing programs, family recreation, and relaxed exploration of sheltered waters.

Traditional Design & Stable Performance

The pram features flat-bottomed sections, flared topsides, and a relatively narrow entry. This combination provides reassuring initial stability while allowing the boat to move smoothly through protected waters. Its compact size also makes launching, handling, and transportation convenient.

Powered by sail and oars, the Norwegian Sailing Pram offers responsive yet forgiving handling. Under sail, it is suitable for novice sailors and youth instruction, while its efficient rowing characteristics make it practical for short-distance trips.

Custom-Built to Your Specifications

Every boat can be customized to suit individual requirements. Available options may include:

  • Wood species
  • Spar and sail configurations
  • Seating layout
  • Paint or varnish finishes
  • Hardware selections
  • Outfitting options

This flexibility makes the Norwegian Sailing Pram suitable for family sailing, yacht tender use, recreational boating, and small-boat training programs.

General Specifications

  • Length Overall (LOA): 11'9"
  • Beam: 3'6"
  • Propulsion: Sail and oars
  • Intended Use: Protected waters, lakes, and sheltered coastal areas

Typical construction time is approximately 3–4 months, depending on the selected finish, outfitting, and customization requirements.

Scandinavian Small-Boat Heritage

The Norwegian Sailing Pram reflects the enduring practicality of Scandinavian pram dinghies, which were traditionally valued for their stability, shallow draft, compact dimensions, and efficient use of interior space. Its squared bow maximizes usable space while maintaining a manageable overall length.

The 1989 design combines these traditional Nordic characteristics with modern wooden-boat construction techniques, creating a practical craft that retains the character and craftsmanship of classic Scandinavian boatbuilding.

Built to Order

We build each Norwegian Sailing Pram to order using the appropriate plans for the commissioned configuration. In addition to full-size boats, we can also create finely detailed scale models based on the design.
