Description
Built to 1:66 scale based on original plans, photographs, and drawings, the model highlights Columbia's timeless elegance. Key features include a tall single mast with hand-stitched linen sails and detailed rigging, varnished natural-wood hull with a painted waterline, wooden hatches, and finely crafted metal stanchions and railings. Each element is finished with care to reflect the yacht's racing legacy.
Mounted securely on a polished wooden base with a brass nameplate engraved "Columbia 1958," this model makes a perfect addition for collectors and sailing enthusiasts alike. For safe shipping, the mast and sails are folded down, requiring only light assembly upon arrival.
The Columbia sailboat was a celebrated American racing yacht built in 1899 to compete in the prestigious America's Cup races. Designed by the legendary naval architect Nathanael Greene Herreshoff and constructed at the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company in Bristol, Rhode Island, Columbia represented the height of yacht innovation at the turn of the century. The yacht was commissioned by J. Pierpont Morgan and Edwin Dennison Morgan, both prominent members of the New York Yacht Club, who sought a vessel capable of defending America's supremacy in competitive sailing.
Columbia featured cutting-edge materials for her time, including a nickel steel frame, a tobin bronze-plated hull, and an initially steel mast, which was later replaced with one made of Oregon pine to enhance performance. Measuring 131 feet overall, the yacht combined sleek lines with advanced rigging, making her a formidable competitor on the water.
In the 1899 America's Cup, Columbia successfully defended the trophy against Sir Thomas Lipton's challenger, Shamrock, representing the Royal Ulster Yacht Club. Two years later, she repeated her triumph, once again defeating Lipton's new challenger, Shamrock II, in the 1901 America's Cup. This remarkable achievement made Columbia the first yacht to defend the America's Cup twice consecutively, establishing her as one of the most iconic racing vessels of her era.
