Description

R/V Sally Ride Research Vessel – 36-Inch Handcrafted Wooden Model

Own a handcrafted tribute to one of the most advanced oceanographic research vessels in the United States. The R/V Sally Ride is a state-of-the-art research vessel operated by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego as part of the U.S. academic research fleet. Commissioned in 2016, the vessel was named in honor of Dr. Sally Ride, the first American woman in space and a dedicated advocate for science and education. Designed to support advanced oceanographic missions around the world, Sally Ride conducts research in marine ecosystems, climate science, ocean chemistry, underwater geology, and deep-sea exploration. Equipped with modern laboratories, advanced sonar systems, and sophisticated scientific equipment, the vessel plays a vital role in expanding our understanding of Earth's oceans.

Our 36-inch handcrafted R/V Sally Ride model faithfully captures the distinctive appearance of the original vessel. Each model is individually built by experienced craftsmen using the traditional plank-on-frame construction method—the same principle used in real wooden shipbuilding. We select only premium hardwoods, including Western Red Cedar, Teak, and Mahogany, to ensure exceptional durability, fine detail, and a timeless finish.

Every element is carefully recreated, from the sleek research hull and modern superstructure to the bridge, scientific laboratories, A-frame, cranes, working deck, sonar equipment, satellite communication systems, and other signature features that define this remarkable oceanographic research vessel. Rather than being mass-produced, each model is handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail, resulting in a museum-quality display piece worthy of any scientific, maritime, or exploration collection.

The 36-inch model offers a larger, more commanding display while showcasing an even greater level of craftsmanship and detail. Its increased size allows the Sally Ride's distinctive hull, spacious research deck, and advanced scientific equipment to stand out more prominently, making it an impressive centerpiece for an office, study, display cabinet, or dedicated collection room. Ideal for oceanographers, marine scientists, research institutions, maritime enthusiasts, and serious collectors, the 36-inch version delivers enhanced realism and visual impact while remaining practical for most display spaces. It is the perfect choice for those seeking a substantial museum-quality model that celebrates scientific discovery, innovation, and the lasting legacy of one of America's most respected pioneers in science and exploration.

Each piece is individually handcrafted, with production typically taking 3–6 months, depending on the model's size and complexity. Throughout the process, we'll keep you updated with detailed progress photos at every major milestone, allowing you to review the craftsmanship and approve each stage before we move forward.

You'll receive photos during:

- Hull construction
- Deck detailing and superstructure assembly
- Final painting and finishing

Your satisfaction comes first. We proceed to the next stage only after you've reviewed the previous one.

Secure Worldwide Delivery

Once you approve the completed model, it will be carefully packed in a custom-built wooden shipping crate with multiple layers of protective cushioning to ensure it arrives safely anywhere in the world.

History
The R/V Sally Ride is a modern oceanographic research vessel engineered to support cutting-edge marine science on a global scale. Commissioned in 2016 and constructed by Dakota Creek Industries in Anacortes, Washington, the ship was built for the U.S. Navy’s Office of Naval Research as part of the advanced Neil Armstrong-class. Operated by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the 238-foot (72.5 m) vessel is named in honor of Sally Ride, the first American woman to travel into space, and serves as a highly capable platform for both coastal and deep-ocean research. It features state-of-the-art laboratories, dynamic positioning technology, and sophisticated instrumentation, including multibeam sonar systems.

The vessel supports a diverse portfolio of scientific missions, ranging from marine biology and ocean chemistry to geophysics, climate studies, and seafloor mapping. Its flexible design allows for the deployment of specialized sampling equipment, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), granting researchers access to some of the ocean's least understood regions. Operating primarily throughout the Pacific, the R/V Sally Ride continues to foster international collaboration and advance our understanding of Earth’s changing climate. The ship stands as a testament to innovation, honoring Sally Ride’s enduring legacy of exploration.
