History
Launched in 1930 at the Gorton-Pew Fisheries in Gloucester, Massachusetts, the Gertrude L. Thebaud was designed by Frank Paine to be the ultimate contender in the International Fishermen’s Races. She was a sleek, fast, and exceptionally beautiful schooner, built to reclaim the prestige of the American fishing fleet from Canadian rivals like the Bluenose. Throughout the 1930s, the vessel became a symbol of national pride, participating in intense regattas that drew massive crowds. Beyond her racing pedigree, she served as a functional Gloucester fishing schooner, proving that speed and utility could coexist. She became perhaps the most famous American schooner of the decade, representing the culmination of traditional wooden boat design.

Her career took a somber turn during World War II when she was commissioned for service as a patrol vessel for the U.S. Coast Guard. After the war, she transitioned to the Caribbean trade, seeking a new purpose in the changing maritime economy. Tragically, her story ended in 1948 when she was lost after striking a reef off the coast of Venezuela. Despite her relatively short life, the Gertrude L. Thebaud remains an enduring icon of Gloucester’s maritime heritage.
