History
The Polar Sentinel is the first vessel of the United States Coast Guard's new Polar Security Cutter (PSC) class, representing the nation's next generation of heavy polar icebreakers. Named in 2022, the ship honors the Coast Guard's long tradition of safeguarding American interests in the Arctic and Antarctic while highlighting its expanding role in national security, scientific research, and maritime operations. The Polar Sentinel is being built by Bollinger Mississippi Shipbuilding (formerly VT Halter Marine) and is designed to replace the aging USCGC Polar Star, which has served for nearly five decades. Once completed, the vessel will be among the most capable non-nuclear icebreakers in the world, strengthening the United States' ability to operate year-round in polar regions.

Designed for extreme environments, the Polar Sentinel will measure approximately 460 feet (140 m) in length and feature a reinforced steel hull, advanced diesel-electric propulsion, and powerful icebreaking capabilities. The cutter will support a wide range of missions, including maintaining access to polar waterways, search and rescue, scientific research, environmental protection, national defense, and logistical support for remote research stations.
