Developed under the PROSUB program, it is the result of a 2008 defense partnership between Brazil and French. The submarines are being constructed domestically by Itaguaí Construções Navais (ICN) with technology transfer from French, aiming to modernize Brazil’s fleet and lay the groundwork for a future nuclear-powered submarine. The first unit, Brazil Riachuelo Submarine (S40), was launched in 2018 and commissioned in 2022. Compared to the original Scorpène, it features a larger hull and greater displacement—around 2,000 tons submerged. It is equipped with advanced sonar, torpedoes, and anti-ship missiles, and designed for stealth, long-range patrols, and operation in Brazil’s extensive maritime zones. Brazil Riachuelo Submarine (S40) enhances Brazil’s naval presence and defense industry. Four submarines are planned in total, including Humaitá, Tonelero, and Angostura, which are in various stages of construction.
