Built by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW) in German, the program began in the 1990s, with partial German government funding following the Gulf War. The first three submarines - Dolphin, Leviathan, and Tekuma - were delivered between 1999 and 2000. A second batch, often referred to as the Dolphin-II class, includes Tanin, Rahav, and Drakon. These newer submarines, delivered from 2014 onward, are larger and equipped with air-independent propulsion (AIP), allowing them to remain submerged longer.
