Arabella Ship Model Admiral Line

The Arbella (also spelled Arabella) was the renowned flagship of the Winthrop Fleet, which carried Governor John Winthrop, Puritan settlers, and the Charter of the Massachusetts Bay Company from England to Salem between April 8 and June 12, 1630. This historic voyage marked the founding of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and played a pivotal role in the early history of colonial America.

The Arbella is closely associated with one of the most influential moments in American history. During the voyage, Governor John Winthrop is believed to have delivered his famous "City upon a Hill" sermon, a vision that would later become a defining ideal in American political and cultural thought.

Also aboard the ship was Anne Bradstreet, who would become the first published female poet in colonial America, traveling with her family to begin a new life in the New World.

Originally launched under the name Eagle, the vessel was later renamed Arbella in honor of Lady Arbella Johnson, daughter of Thomas Clinton, 3rd Earl of Lincoln, who sailed with the fleet alongside her husband, Isaac Johnson. The renaming reflected the importance of the Johnson family within the Massachusetts Bay Company and the Puritan migration.

Today, the Arbella remains an enduring symbol of courage, faith, and the pursuit of religious freedom. Its legacy continues to inspire historians, collectors, and maritime enthusiasts alike, making it one of the most significant ships in early American history.
