Governor Alfred E. Smith (fireboat) 36 Inches Ship Model

Governor Alfred E. Smith (Fireboat) – 36-Inch Handcrafted Wooden Model

Own a handcrafted tribute to one of the most historic fireboats in New York City's maritime history. The Governor Alfred E. Smith was a powerful fireboat operated by the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) and named in honor of Alfred E. Smith, the former Governor of New York and four-time presidential candidate. Built to protect the city's waterfront, piers, and harbor facilities, the vessel served for decades as a vital emergency response asset. With its impressive firefighting capability, durable construction, and important role in safeguarding New York Harbor, Governor Alfred E. Smith remains a celebrated symbol of maritime firefighting heritage.

Our 36-inch handcrafted Governor Alfred E. Smith fireboat model faithfully captures the distinctive appearance of the original vessel. Each model is individually built by experienced craftsmen using the traditional plank-on-frame construction method—the same principle used in real wooden shipbuilding. We select only premium hardwoods, including Western Red Cedar, Teak, and Mahogany, to ensure exceptional durability, fine detail, and a timeless finish.

Every element is carefully recreated, from the classic hull design and elevated wheelhouse to the firefighting monitors, water cannons, navigation equipment, radar mast, deck fittings, rescue gear, and other signature features that define this legendary FDNY fireboat. Rather than being mass-produced, each model is handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail, resulting in a museum-quality display piece worthy of any firefighting, maritime, or historical vessel collection.

The 36-inch model offers a larger, more commanding display while showcasing an even greater level of craftsmanship and detail. Its increased size allows the Governor Alfred E. Smith's distinctive hull, firefighting equipment, and historic design features to stand out more prominently, making it an impressive centerpiece for an office, study, display cabinet, or dedicated collection room. Ideal for firefighters, FDNY supporters, maritime enthusiasts, and serious collectors, the 36-inch version delivers enhanced realism and visual impact while remaining practical for most display spaces. It is the perfect choice for those seeking a substantial museum-quality model that celebrates the courage, service, and maritime legacy of this remarkable fireboat.

Each piece is individually handcrafted, with production typically taking 3–6 months, depending on the model's size and complexity. Throughout the process, we'll keep you updated with detailed progress photos at every major milestone, allowing you to review the craftsmanship and approve each stage before we move forward.

History
Commissioned in 1938, Governor Alfred E. Smith served for decades as one of the Fire Department of New York's principal fireboats, named after former New York Governor Alfred E. Smith. Built during an era when New York Harbor was one of the busiest ports in the world, the vessel was designed to protect waterfront industries, passenger terminals, warehouses, and ships from devastating fires. Its powerful pumping systems and robust construction made it one of the most capable fireboats of its generation.

Throughout its long career, Governor Alfred E. Smith responded to countless fires, maritime emergencies, and rescue operations, becoming an important part of New York City's emergency response history. Although eventually retired from active service, the vessel remains a significant symbol of American maritime firefighting heritage and the evolution of specialized emergency response vessels that have safeguarded one of the world's greatest harbors for generations.
