Rebecca T. Ruark Skipjack – 30-Inch Handcrafted Wooden Model

Own a handcrafted model of one of the Chesapeake Bay's most celebrated working sailboats. The Rebecca T. Ruark Skipjack was launched in 1886 in Baltimore, Maryland, and is recognized as one of the oldest surviving skipjacks still sailing today. Built for oyster dredging in the rich waters of the Chesapeake Bay, she has spent well over a century preserving the traditions of America's historic oyster fleet. Her graceful lines, shallow-draft hull, and distinctive sail plan have made her an enduring symbol of Chesapeake Bay maritime heritage and the resilience of traditional American watermen.

Our 30-inch handcrafted Rebecca T. Ruark Skipjack model faithfully captures the timeless beauty and authentic character of the original vessel. Each model is individually built by experienced craftsmen using the traditional plank-on-frame construction method—the same principle used in real wooden shipbuilding. We select only premium hardwoods, including Western Red Cedar, Teak, and Mahogany, to ensure exceptional durability, fine detail, and a timeless finish.

The 30-inch model offers the perfect balance of craftsmanship, practicality, and value. Large enough to showcase the skipjack's intricate details yet compact enough to fit comfortably on bookshelves, office desks, display cabinets, or mantels, it is an ideal choice for both home and office display. Its convenient size also makes it more affordable than larger models, easier to ship worldwide, and a thoughtful gift for sailing enthusiasts, collectors, historians, or anyone who appreciates America's traditional working boats.

Each piece is individually handcrafted, with production typically taking 3–6 months, depending on the model's size and complexity. Throughout the process, we'll provide detailed progress photos at every major milestone, allowing you to review the craftsmanship and approve each stage before work continues.

You'll receive photos during:

- Hull construction
- Deck detailing, mast installation, and rigging assembly
- Final painting and finishing

Your satisfaction comes first. We proceed to the next stage only after you've reviewed the previous one.

Secure Worldwide Delivery

Once you approve the completed model, it will be carefully packed in a custom-built wooden shipping crate with multiple layers of protective cushioning to ensure it arrives safely anywhere in the world.

History
Built in 1886 in Taylors Island, Maryland, the Rebecca T. Ruark is the oldest documented working skipjack in the Chesapeake Bay fleet. As a traditional oyster dredging vessel, she features the iconic "V-bottom" hull and raked mast that allow skipjacks to navigate the shallow, wind-swept waters of the bay with remarkable efficiency. For over a century, she was the quintessential workhorse of the Chesapeake oyster industry, relying entirely on wind power to pull heavy dredges across oyster bars. Her longevity is a testament to the durability of her original construction and the dedicated, generational maintenance required to preserve such a specialized wooden vessel in a demanding saltwater environment.

The Rebecca T. Ruark has survived through periods of immense change in the maritime industry, remaining a symbol of the Chesapeake’s vanishing age of sail. Designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1997, she has transitioned from a full-time commercial oyster boat to an educational ambassador, sharing the history of oystering and traditional boatbuilding with the public. While many other historic skipjacks have succumbed to decay or mechanical conversion, the Rebecca T. Ruark persists as one of the last few vessels that can still be seen under sail in the bay. She stands as a living monument to the rugged independence of watermen and the enduring cultural legacy of the Chesapeake Bay's unique maritime heritage.
