Lettie G. Howard Schooner – 30-Inch Handcrafted Wooden Model
Own a handcrafted model of one of America's last surviving Grand Banks fishing schooners. The Lettie G. Howard Schooner was launched in 1893 in Essex, Massachusetts, and spent decades fishing the rich waters of the North Atlantic before being preserved as a National Historic Landmark. Today, she continues to sail as an educational vessel, inspiring new generations with her remarkable history and showcasing the craftsmanship that defined America's golden age of sail. Her elegant lines, towering rig, and enduring legacy have made her a cherished symbol of New England's maritime heritage.
Our 30-inch handcrafted Lettie G. Howard Schooner model faithfully captures the timeless beauty of the original vessel. Each model is individually built by experienced craftsmen using the traditional plank-on-frame construction method—the same principle used in real wooden shipbuilding. We select only premium hardwoods, including Western Red Cedar, Teak, and Mahogany, to ensure exceptional durability, fine detail, and a timeless finish.
Every element is carefully recreated, from the gracefully shaped hull and finely crafted deck to the twin masts, intricate standing and running rigging, bowsprit, deck fittings, and other signature features that define this historic schooner. Rather than being mass-produced, each model is handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail, resulting in a display piece worthy of any maritime, sailing, or historical ship collection.
The 30-inch model offers the perfect balance of craftsmanship, practicality, and value. Large enough to showcase the schooner's intricate details yet compact enough to fit comfortably on bookshelves, office desks, display cabinets, or mantels, it is an ideal choice for both home and office display. Its convenient size also makes it more affordable than larger models, easier to ship worldwide, and a thoughtful gift for sailing enthusiasts, collectors, historians, or anyone who appreciates classic wooden ships.
Each piece is individually handcrafted, with production typically taking 3–6 months, depending on the model's size and complexity. Throughout the process, we'll provide detailed progress photos at every major milestone, allowing you to review the craftsmanship and approve each stage before work continues.
You'll receive photos during:
- Hull construction
- Deck detailing, mast installation, and rigging assembly
- Final painting and finishing
Your satisfaction comes first. We proceed to the next stage only after you've reviewed the previous one.
Secure Worldwide Delivery
Once you approve the completed model, it will be carefully packed in a custom-built wooden shipping crate with multiple layers of protective cushioning to ensure it arrives safely anywhere in the world.

History
Launched in 1893 in Essex, Massachusetts, the Lettie G. Howard is a historic Fredonia-style fishing schooner that exemplifies the design innovations of the late 19th-century New England fleet. Built for the red snapper fishery in the Gulf of Mexico, her unique design prioritized a shallow draft and high maneuverability, which allowed her to navigate the intricate coral reefs where her target catch thrived. Throughout her working life, she proved to be a exceptionally versatile and sturdy vessel, adapting to the changing demands of the commercial fishing industry. Her preservation provides a rare, tangible link to the era when such wooden schooners were the backbone of America’s maritime economy and coastal commerce.
Following her commercial retirement, the Lettie G. Howard underwent an extensive restoration that transformed her into a floating classroom and ambassador for maritime heritage. Now based at the South Street Seaport Museum in New York City, she is one of the few remaining examples of this specific class of vessel. Because the original ship is so historically significant, highly detailed ship models of the Lettie G. Howard have become essential tools for historians and enthusiasts to study her complex rigging and hull construction. These models preserve the architectural legacy of a vanished way of life, ensuring that future generations can appreciate the masterful engineering that once defined the golden age of American sail.
