History
The USNS Pomeroy (T-AKR-316) represents the peak of late-1990s strategic naval transport engineering, serving as a critical vehicle carrier for the U.S. Navy's Military Sealift Command. The ship pays tribute to Private First Class Ralph E. Pomeroy, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his immense bravery and ultimate sacrifice during the Korean War in 1952. Her keel was laid down on April 25, 2000, at the NASSCO shipyard in San Diego, and she was launched into San Diego Bay on March 10, 2001, before officially entering active non-commissioned service on August 14, 2001, to support global military supply chains.

With a massive displacement of nearly 63,000 tons and a length of 951 feet, the USNS Pomeroy was engineered for rapid roll-on/roll-off operations, allowing an entire heavy army brigade to deploy its equipment within hours using internal ramps and side ports. Driven by two powerful GE Marine gas turbines, the vessel maintained a crucial presence in the Pacific and Middle Eastern theaters during the Global War on Terror.
