The USNS Watson (T-AKR-310) is the lead ship of her class of large, medium-speed roll-on/roll-off (LMSR) vehicle cargo ships operated by the U.S. Navy's Military Sealift Command. Named in honor of Private George Watson, a World War II Army soldier posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 1997, the massive 951-foot vessel had its keel laid down on May 23, 1996. Launched on July 26, 1997 and entering active service on June 23, 1998, she was custom-engineered to rapidly preposition heavy military equipment—such as main battle tanks and helicopters—anywhere across the globe.

Powered by advanced gas turbines that allow speeds up to 24 knots, the USNS Watson played a monumental logistical role in major modern operations, including Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
