The historic pilot boat California, famously known as the Golden Gate pilot boat, was built in 1913 by the Union Iron Works to conquer the treacherous entrance of the San Francisco Bay. After logging hundreds of thousands of sea miles, she was finally retired from active pilot service in 1972.
