Commissioned in 2006, USCGC Mackinaw (WLBB-30) is the United States Coast Guard's modern Great Lakes icebreaking buoy tender, replacing the legendary icebreaker of the same name that served for more than six decades. Designed specifically for operations on the Great Lakes, the vessel combines powerful icebreaking capability with buoy tending, search and rescue, environmental response, and maritime law enforcement duties. Its innovative hull design and diesel-electric propulsion system enable Mackinaw to break through thick freshwater ice while maintaining safe navigation routes for commercial shipping during the harsh winter months.
