Based on the French Scorpène design by Naval Group, India INS Kalvari Submarine (S21) was constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai under India’s “Make in India” initiative. The project aimed to enhance India’s underwater warfare capabilities with modern, stealthy submarines. Kalvari was launched in 2015 and commissioned into service on December 14, 2017. The submarine features advanced stealth technology, making it difficult to detect underwater. It is equipped with precision-guided torpedoes and anti-ship missiles, capable of neutralizing surface and sub-surface threats. Powered by diesel-electric propulsion with air-independent propulsion (AIP) planned for future upgrades, Kalvari has a top submerged speed of over 20 knots and can stay underwater for extended durations, enhancing its operational reach.
