History of USS Constellation Ship Model

The USS Constellation was one of the six original frigates authorized under the Naval Act of 1794, which established the foundation of the early United States Navy. Built at Harris Creek Shipyard in Baltimore's Fells Point, the ship was launched on September 7, 1797, as the United States entered the Quasi-War with France.

On February 9, 1799, under the command of Captain Thomas Truxtun, USS Constellation defeated and captured the French frigate L'Insurgente, a 36-gun vessel. This victory became one of the earliest major successes of an American-designed and built warship.

In February 1800, Constellation engaged the French frigate La Vengeance in a fierce five-hour night battle. Although the French ship ultimately escaped capture, Constellation's remarkable speed and fighting ability earned her the legendary nickname “Yankee Racehorse.”
