SS Nieuw Amsterdam Ocean Liner – 36-Inch Handcrafted Wooden Model
Own a handcrafted replica of one of the Netherlands' most elegant and celebrated ocean liners. Launched in 1937 for the Holland America Line, the SS Nieuw Amsterdam was renowned for her luxurious accommodations, graceful design, and exceptional transatlantic service. Named after the historic Dutch settlement that later became New York City, the vessel served as both a prestigious passenger liner and, during World War II, a troopship transporting thousands of Allied personnel. Following the war, she returned to civilian service and became one of the most admired ocean liners of the twentieth century, symbolizing Dutch maritime excellence and the golden age of transatlantic travel.
Our 36-inch handcrafted SS Nieuw Amsterdam Ocean Liner model faithfully captures the distinctive appearance of the original vessel. Each model is individually built by experienced craftsmen using the traditional plank-on-frame construction method—the same principle used in real wooden shipbuilding. We select only premium hardwoods, including Western Red Cedar, Teak, and Mahogany, to ensure exceptional durability, refined craftsmanship, and a timeless museum-quality finish.
Every element is carefully recreated, from the ship's graceful black hull and elegant white superstructure to its streamlined funnels, expansive promenade decks, navigation bridge, lifeboats, masts, deck fittings, and other signature features that made the SS Nieuw Amsterdam one of the world's finest passenger liners. Rather than being mass-produced, each model is handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail, resulting in a display piece worthy of any maritime, historical, or nautical collection.
The 36-inch model offers a larger, more commanding display while showcasing an even greater level of craftsmanship and detail. Its increased size allows the SS Nieuw Amsterdam's elegant silhouette, spacious passenger decks, and refined architectural features to stand out more prominently, making it an impressive centerpiece for an office, study, library, display cabinet, or dedicated collection room. Ideal for ocean liner enthusiasts, maritime historians, collectors, former passengers and crew, and admirers of classic passenger ships, the 36-inch version provides a stronger visual presence and enhanced realism while remaining practical enough for most display spaces. It is the perfect choice for those seeking a substantial museum-quality replica that celebrates one of the greatest achievements in Dutch passenger ship design.
Each piece is individually handcrafted, and production typically takes 3–6 months, depending on the model's size and complexity. Throughout the process, we'll keep you updated with detailed progress photos at every major milestone, allowing you to review the craftsmanship and approve each stage before we move forward.
You'll receive photos during:
- Hull construction
- Deck detailing and superstructure assembly
- Final painting and finishing
Your satisfaction comes first. We proceed to the next stage only after you've reviewed the previous one.

History
The SS Nieuw Amsterdam was the flagship of the Holland America Line and remains one of the most elegant Dutch ocean liners ever constructed. Launched in 1937 and entering service in 1938, she was designed to offer world-class transatlantic travel between Rotterdam and New York. Her sophisticated Art Deco interiors, expansive public rooms, and cutting-edge engineering reflected the highest standards of prewar shipbuilding. By successfully harmonizing comfort, speed, and operational reliability, the Nieuw Amsterdam quickly earned an international reputation as one of the finest passenger liners on the Atlantic, attracting a global clientele through her refined accommodations and exceptional service.
During the Second World War, the Nieuw Amsterdam was requisitioned and converted into a troopship, transporting more than 350,000 Allied soldiers across the globe without losing a single passenger to enemy action. Following the conflict, she underwent an extensive refit before returning to commercial service, resuming her transatlantic crossings and later expanding into luxury cruising as air travel gradually supplanted ocean liners. After nearly four decades of distinguished service, she was retired in 1974 and sold for scrapping later that year. Although the vessel no longer exists, the SS Nieuw Amsterdam remains a celebrated symbol of Dutch maritime excellence, remembered for her elegant design, remarkable wartime record, and enduring legacy in the history of transatlantic passenger travel.
