Description

USS Kirk Destroyer Escort – 36-Inch Handcrafted Wooden Model

Own a handcrafted replica of one of the U.S. Navy's most remarkable destroyer escorts. Commissioned in 1943, USS Kirk (DE-1087) served with distinction during the Vietnam War and earned lasting recognition for her extraordinary role in Operation Frequent Wind and Operation New Life in 1975. During the final days of the Vietnam War, USS Kirk escorted thousands of South Vietnamese refugees to safety while supporting one of the largest humanitarian evacuations in modern naval history. Her courageous service, professionalism, and compassion have made the ship an enduring symbol of duty, resilience, and humanitarian commitment.

Our 36-inch handcrafted USS Kirk Destroyer Escort model faithfully captures the distinctive appearance of the original vessel. Each model is individually built by experienced craftsmen using the traditional plank-on-frame construction method—the same principle used in real wooden shipbuilding. We select only premium hardwoods, including Western Red Cedar, Teak, and Mahogany, to ensure exceptional durability, refined craftsmanship, and a timeless museum-quality finish.

Every element is carefully recreated, from the ship's sleek hull and detailed superstructure to the bridge, radar arrays, missile launcher, gun mounts, masts, lifeboats, deck equipment, and other signature features that defined this capable naval escort vessel. Rather than being mass-produced, each model is handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail, resulting in a display piece worthy of any naval, military, or maritime collection.

The 36-inch model offers a larger, more commanding display while showcasing an even greater level of craftsmanship and detail. Its increased size allows the USS Kirk's elegant profile, sophisticated weapon systems, and intricate deck details to stand out more prominently, making it an impressive centerpiece for an office, study, display cabinet, or dedicated collection room. Ideal for naval veterans, active-duty service members, military historians, collectors, and enthusiasts of modern naval history, the 36-inch version provides a stronger visual presence and enhanced realism while remaining practical enough for most display spaces. It is the perfect choice for those seeking a substantial museum-quality replica that honors one of the U.S. Navy's most respected escort ships.

Each piece is individually handcrafted, and production typically takes 3–6 months, depending on the model's size and complexity. Throughout the process, we'll keep you updated with detailed progress photos at every major milestone, allowing you to review the craftsmanship and approve each stage before we move forward.

You'll receive photos during:

- Hull construction
- Deck detailing and superstructure assembly
- Final painting and finishing

Your satisfaction comes first. We proceed to the next stage only after you've reviewed the previous one.

Secure Worldwide Delivery

Once you approve the completed model, it will be carefully packed in a custom-built wooden shipping crate with multiple layers of protective cushioning to ensure it arrives safely anywhere in the world.

History
The USS Kirk (DE-1087) was a Knox-class destroyer escort—later redesignated as a frigate—built for the U.S. Navy during the Cold War. Commissioned in 1973, the vessel was engineered primarily for anti-submarine warfare, tasked with shielding aircraft carrier battle groups and merchant convoys from underwater threats. Equipped with sophisticated sonar suites, guided missiles, torpedoes, and robust helicopter support, the Kirk represented a new generation of highly capable escort platforms. Throughout her early career, she participated in extensive training exercises and fleet operations across the Pacific, consistently demonstrating the versatility and operational endurance expected of modern U.S. Navy warships.

The USS Kirk earned enduring recognition in April 1975 during the final days of the Vietnam War. Assigned to Operation Frequent Wind during the collapse of Saigon, the ship facilitated the rescue of thousands of Vietnamese refugees. In one of the most remarkable humanitarian missions in modern naval history, the crew of the Kirk provided critical guidance to escaping South Vietnamese naval vessels and successfully recovered numerous helicopters that landed on or near the ship. Their exceptional professionalism and compassion saved countless lives under extremely harrowing conditions. Following decades of distinguished service, the USS Kirk was decommissioned in 1993. Today, she is remembered not only for her combat capabilities but also for her extraordinary humanitarian legacy during one of the most dramatic and pivotal evacuations of the 20th century.
