Description

Mary and John – 36-Inch Handcrafted Wooden Model

Own a handcrafted replica of one of the most significant ships in early American colonial history. The Mary and John is best remembered for transporting approximately 140 Puritan settlers from England to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630 as part of the Great Puritan Migration. Commanded by Captain Squeb, the vessel completed a remarkable transatlantic voyage that contributed to the establishment of new communities and laid the foundations for generations of settlement in New England. Its historic journey has made the Mary and John a lasting symbol of courage, perseverance, and the pursuit of new beginnings.

Our 36-inch handcrafted Mary and John model faithfully captures the timeless beauty of this historic sailing vessel. Each model is individually built by experienced craftsmen using the traditional plank-on-frame construction method—the same principle used in real wooden shipbuilding. We select only premium hardwoods, including Western Red Cedar, Teak, and Mahogany, to ensure exceptional durability, refined craftsmanship, and a timeless museum-quality finish.

Every element is carefully recreated, from the ship's elegantly curved hull and towering masts to its intricate rigging, hand-finished wooden deck, bowsprit, stern gallery, lifeboat, and other signature features that define a 17th-century English sailing ship. Rather than being mass-produced, each model is handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail, resulting in a display piece worthy of any maritime, historical, or nautical collection.

The 36-inch model offers a larger, more commanding display while showcasing an even greater level of craftsmanship and detail. Its increased size allows the Mary and John's graceful hull, traditional rigging, and authentic period features to stand out more prominently, making it an impressive centerpiece for an office, study, library, display cabinet, or dedicated collection room. Ideal for maritime enthusiasts, historians, collectors, educators, and admirers of early colonial history, the 36-inch version provides a stronger visual presence and enhanced realism while remaining practical enough for most display spaces. It is the perfect choice for those seeking a substantial museum-quality replica that commemorates one of the most influential voyages in early American settlement.

Each piece is individually handcrafted, and production typically takes 3–6 months, depending on the model's size and complexity. Throughout the process, we'll keep you updated with detailed progress photos at every major milestone, allowing you to review the craftsmanship and approve each stage before we move forward.

You'll receive photos during:

- Hull construction
- Deck detailing and superstructure assembly
- Final painting and finishing

Your satisfaction comes first. We proceed to the next stage only after you've reviewed the previous one.

Secure Worldwide Delivery

History
The Mary and John was a 17th-century English merchant vessel best known for transporting one of the earliest groups of Puritan settlers to New England. Chartered by the Dorchester Company, the ship departed Plymouth, England, on March 20, 1630, carrying approximately 140 passengers, including families seeking religious freedom and the opportunity to establish new lives in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Under the command of Captain Roger Chappell, the transatlantic voyage lasted ten weeks before the ship arrived at Nantasket—present-day Hull, Massachusetts—in May 1630. Instead of continuing to Salem, many of the passengers went on to found the settlement of Dorchester, now one of the oldest towns in Massachusetts, and played a foundational role in the expansion of early colonial New England.

The Mary and John serves as an enduring symbol of the Great Puritan Migration, which brought thousands of English settlers to North America during the 1630s. Unlike the more widely recognized Mayflower, this ship carried entire families, skilled craftsmen, and community leaders who collectively helped establish permanent towns, churches, and local governing bodies. While relatively little is known about the vessel's later operational history, its 1630 voyage remains a landmark event in American colonial history. Today, the Mary and John is remembered as a testament to the faith, perseverance, and determination of early settlers whose contributions helped shape the social, cultural, and political foundations of New England and the emerging United States.
