History
The Polarstern II—often referred to as the next-generation Polar Energy Icebreaker—is currently under development for the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) and represents the future of global polar exploration. Designed to succeed the legendary RV Polarstern, which has served as Germany’s flagship polar research vessel since 1982, this new ship is engineered to set a new standard for scientific discovery. Scheduled to enter service later this decade, the vessel will feature a state-of-the-art icebreaking hull, advanced diesel-electric propulsion, and sustainable technologies designed to significantly minimize emissions. Measuring approximately 160 meters (525 feet) in length, it will provide extensive accommodations for over 60 scientists and 50 crew members, supported by modern laboratories, helicopter facilities, moon pools, and a suite of sophisticated oceanographic instrumentation.

Engineered for year-round operation in the world's most extreme environments, the ship will facilitate critical research in climate science, marine biology, oceanography, geology, and sea-ice dynamics. The vessel is designed to deploy a versatile array of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), and advanced sampling systems to probe the furthest reaches of the Arctic and Antarctic. As the successor to one of the most respected research icebreakers in history, the Polarstern II symbolizes the next era of sustainable polar exploration.
