R/V Atlantis Research Vessel – 36-Inch Handcrafted Wooden Model
Own a handcrafted tribute to one of the world's most renowned oceanographic research vessels. The R/V Atlantis is a legendary research vessel operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and is best known as the support ship for the deep-sea submersible Alvin, one of the most successful human-occupied research submersibles in history. Commissioned in 1997, Atlantis has supported groundbreaking scientific missions around the world, exploring deep-sea ecosystems, hydrothermal vents, underwater geology, marine biology, and ocean processes. With her advanced research capabilities, specialized equipment, and decades of scientific achievements, Atlantis has become an iconic symbol of ocean exploration and discovery.
Our 36-inch handcrafted R/V Atlantis model faithfully captures the distinctive appearance of the original vessel. Each model is individually built by experienced craftsmen using the traditional plank-on-frame construction method—the same principle used in real wooden shipbuilding. We select only premium hardwoods, including Western Red Cedar, Teak, and Mahogany, to ensure exceptional durability, fine detail, and a timeless finish.
Every element is carefully recreated, from the sleek research hull and modern superstructure to the bridge, scientific laboratories, A-frame, submersible support equipment, cranes, working deck, sonar systems, satellite communication equipment, and other signature features that define this remarkable ocean exploration vessel. Rather than being mass-produced, each model is handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail, resulting in a museum-quality display piece worthy of any scientific, maritime, or exploration collection.
The 36-inch model offers a larger, more commanding display while showcasing an even greater level of craftsmanship and detail. Its increased size allows the Atlantis' distinctive hull, spacious research deck, and specialized deep-sea exploration equipment to stand out more prominently, making it an impressive centerpiece for an office, study, display cabinet, or dedicated collection room. Ideal for oceanographers, marine scientists, research institutions, maritime enthusiasts, and serious collectors, the 36-inch version delivers enhanced realism and visual impact while remaining practical for most display spaces. It is the perfect choice for those seeking a substantial museum-quality model that celebrates the spirit of discovery, scientific achievement, and the remarkable legacy of one of the world's greatest ocean research vessels.
Each piece is individually handcrafted, with production typically taking 3–6 months, depending on the model's size and complexity. Throughout the process, we'll keep you updated with detailed progress photos at every major milestone, allowing you to review the craftsmanship and approve each stage before we move forward.
You'll receive photos during:
- Hull construction
- Deck detailing and superstructure assembly
- Final painting and finishing
Your satisfaction comes first. We proceed to the next stage only after you've reviewed the previous one.
Secure Worldwide Delivery
Once you approve the completed model, it will be carefully packed in a custom-built wooden shipping crate with multiple layers of protective cushioning to ensure it arrives safely anywhere in the world.

History
The R/V Atlantis stands as one of the world's most renowned oceanographic research vessels and a premier flagship for deep-sea scientific exploration. Commissioned in 1997 and constructed by Halter Marine in Moss Point, Mississippi, the ship was built for the U.S. Navy’s Office of Naval Research and is currently operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Measuring 274 feet (83.5 m) in length, this vessel is engineered with advanced laboratories, dynamic positioning technology, and sophisticated navigation systems. It is perhaps best known for its role as the dedicated support ship for the iconic deep-submergence vehicle DSV Alvin, which has facilitated numerous groundbreaking discoveries beneath the waves.
Throughout its career, the R/V Atlantis has completed hundreds of expeditions focused on marine biology, geology, ocean chemistry, hydrothermal vents, and deep-sea ecosystems. Its capacity to deploy both crewed and robotic submersibles allows researchers to investigate the most remote environments on the planet, from mid-ocean ridges to the deepest ocean trenches. These missions have fundamentally expanded our understanding of tectonic activity, marine life, and global ocean systems. Today, the R/V Atlantis continues its legacy of innovation and discovery, remaining a critical asset for international scientific collaboration and the advancement of ocean science.
