Description
Own a handcrafted replica of one of the U.S. Military Sealift Command's most capable strategic sealift vessels. USNS Soderman (T-AKR-317) is the final ship of the distinguished Watson-class Large, Medium-Speed Roll-on/Roll-off (LMSR) fleet, serving as a vital asset in America's global military logistics network. Named in honor of Army Private First Class William A. Soderman, a Medal of Honor recipient from World War II, the vessel is designed to transport tanks, armored vehicles, heavy equipment, and humanitarian supplies across the world's oceans, ensuring rapid support for military operations and disaster relief missions alike.
Our 36-inch handcrafted USNS Soderman model faithfully captures the distinctive appearance of the original vessel. Each model is individually built by experienced craftsmen using the traditional plank-on-frame construction method—the same principle used in authentic wooden shipbuilding. We select only premium hardwoods, including Western Red Cedar, Teak, and Mahogany, to ensure exceptional durability, fine craftsmanship, and a timeless finish.
Every element is carefully recreated, from the massive hull and expansive cargo decks to the commercial-style superstructure, roll-on/roll-off ramps, deck cranes, cargo handling equipment, deck fittings, and other signature features that define this remarkable military transport vessel. Rather than being mass-produced, each model is individually handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail, creating a museum-quality display piece worthy of any military, naval, or maritime collection.
One of the defining characteristics of USNS Soderman is its powerful twin-screw propulsion system and robust auxiliary deck machinery, engineered to safely maneuver enormous cargo loads during demanding open-ocean operations. Designed to carry heavy military vehicles, equipment, and humanitarian supplies to ports around the world, the vessel represents the strength and reliability of modern strategic sealift. This handcrafted model faithfully highlights its expansive deck layout, detailed cargo handling systems, and commanding naval profile, showcasing the engineering excellence that makes USNS Soderman an indispensable logistics platform.
The 36-inch model offers a larger, more commanding display while showcasing an even greater level of craftsmanship and detail. Its increased size allows USNS Soderman's expansive cargo decks, roll-on/roll-off ramps, cargo handling equipment, commercial-style superstructure, and rugged hull design to be appreciated with exceptional clarity, creating an impressive centerpiece for an executive office, study, display cabinet, or dedicated collection room. Preferred by serious collectors, military historians, veterans, and naval enthusiasts, the 36-inch version delivers enhanced realism, stronger visual presence, and a museum-quality presentation while remaining ideally suited for larger display spaces. It is the perfect choice for those seeking a premium handcrafted replica that fully captures the engineering excellence, logistical capability, and strategic importance of one of America's premier military sealift vessels.
Each piece is individually handcrafted, and production typically takes 3–6 months, depending on the model's size and complexity. History
The USNS Soderman (T-AKR-317) is the final Watson-class Large, Medium-Speed Roll-on/Roll-off (LMSR) cargo ship built for the U.S. Navy, representing the culmination of the class’s advanced strategic sealift design. The vessel is named in honor of Private First Class William A. Soderman, a World War II hero who received the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary actions during the Battle of the Bulge, where he helped halt a German armored assault. Construction began on October 31, 2000, at the National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) in San Diego. She was launched on April 26, 2002, and officially entered active non-commissioned service with the Military Sealift Command on September 24, 2002.
Stretching approximately 950 feet in length, the USNS Soderman features a robust steel hull and is operated as part of the U.S. military’s Afloat Prepositioning Program, maintaining heavy vehicles, equipment, and critical supplies in a constant state of deployment readiness. Designed for maximum operational flexibility, the ship incorporates expansive multi-level vehicle decks, efficient roll-on/roll-off cargo access, and a large helicopter landing area to support rapid logistics and military operations worldwide.
