NOAA Ship Rainier (S 221) – 36-Inch Handcrafted Wooden Model
Own a handcrafted tribute to one of NOAA's most respected hydrographic survey vessels. Commissioned in 1968, the NOAA Ship Rainier (S 221) is one of the longest-serving vessels in the NOAA fleet and has played a vital role in mapping and surveying the waters of Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. Originally built for the U.S. Navy as a minesweeper before being transferred to NOAA, Rainier was transformed into a highly capable ocean survey platform. Equipped with advanced sonar systems, survey launches, and modern hydrographic technology, Rainier continues to support safe navigation, coastal research, and the creation of accurate nautical charts in some of the world's most challenging marine environments.
Our 36-inch handcrafted NOAA Ship Rainier model faithfully captures the distinctive appearance of the original vessel. Each model is individually built by experienced craftsmen using the traditional plank-on-frame construction method—the same principle used in real wooden shipbuilding. We select only premium hardwoods, including Western Red Cedar, Teak, and Mahogany, to ensure exceptional durability, fine detail, and a timeless finish.
Every element is carefully recreated, from the classic survey hull and elevated superstructure to the bridge, hydrographic equipment, survey boats, cranes, working deck, radar masts, sonar systems, and other signature features that define this legendary ocean-mapping vessel. Rather than being mass-produced, each model is handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail, resulting in a museum-quality display piece worthy of any maritime, scientific, or NOAA collection.
The 36-inch model offers a larger, more commanding display while showcasing an even greater level of craftsmanship and detail. Its increased size allows the Rainier's distinctive hull, spacious survey deck, and specialized research equipment to stand out more prominently, making it an impressive centerpiece for an office, study, display cabinet, or dedicated collection room. Ideal for hydrographic professionals, oceanographers, NOAA supporters, maritime enthusiasts, and serious collectors, the 36-inch version delivers enhanced realism and visual impact while remaining practical for most display spaces. It is the perfect choice for those seeking a substantial museum-quality model that celebrates the exploration, precision, and scientific legacy of this historic survey vessel.
Each piece is individually handcrafted, with production typically taking 3–6 months, depending on the model's size and complexity. Throughout the process, we'll keep you updated with detailed progress photos at every major milestone, allowing you to review the craftsmanship and approve each stage before we move forward.
You'll receive photos during:
- Hull construction
- Deck detailing and superstructure assembly
- Final painting and finishing
Your satisfaction comes first. We proceed to the next stage only after you've reviewed the previous one.
Secure Worldwide Delivery
Once you approve the completed model, it will be carefully packed in a custom-built wooden shipping crate with multiple layers of protective cushioning to ensure it arrives safely anywhere in the world.

History
Commissioned in 1968, NOAA Ship Rainier (S 221) is one of NOAA's longest-serving hydrographic survey vessels and has spent decades improving the safety of navigation in U.S. coastal waters. Named after Mount Rainier in Washington State, the ship was specifically designed to conduct hydrographic surveys, seabed mapping, and shoreline investigations, primarily throughout Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. Following extensive modernization in the 1990s, Rainier was upgraded with advanced sonar, positioning systems, and survey technology that significantly enhanced its scientific capabilities.
Today, Rainier continues to play a vital role in updating nautical charts used by commercial shipping, fishing fleets, cruise vessels, and recreational mariners. Operating multiple survey launches equipped with sophisticated multibeam sonar, the vessel collects highly accurate bathymetric data that improves maritime safety and supports coastal management. Its long service history and continuous contributions to hydrographic science have made Rainier one of NOAA's most respected and productive research vessels.
