USCGC Polar Star (WAGB-10) – 36-Inch Handcrafted Wooden Model
Own a handcrafted tribute to one of the United States Coast Guard's most iconic icebreakers. Commissioned in 1976, the USCGC Polar Star (WAGB-10) is the oldest active heavy icebreaker in the U.S. fleet and has played a vital role in supporting scientific research, national security, search and rescue, and logistical missions in the Arctic and Antarctic. Built to break through ice up to several feet thick, the Polar Star has repeatedly completed the challenging annual Operation Deep Freeze, ensuring the resupply of research stations in one of the world's most extreme environments. Its remarkable endurance, immense power, and decades of distinguished service have made it a symbol of American polar exploration and maritime excellence.
Our 36-inch handcrafted USCGC Polar Star model faithfully captures the distinctive appearance of the original vessel. Each model is individually built by experienced craftsmen using the traditional plank-on-frame construction method—the same principle used in real wooden shipbuilding. We select only premium hardwoods, including Western Red Cedar, Teak, and Mahogany, to ensure exceptional durability, fine detail, and a timeless finish.
Every element is carefully recreated, from the reinforced icebreaking hull and commanding superstructure to the bridge, cranes, helicopter flight deck, radar masts, lifeboats, deck equipment, and other signature features that define this legendary Coast Guard cutter. Rather than being mass-produced, each model is handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail, resulting in a museum-quality display piece worthy of any maritime or Coast Guard collection.
The 36-inch model offers a larger, more commanding display while showcasing an even greater level of craftsmanship and detail. Its increased size allows the Polar Star's massive icebreaking bow, expansive working decks, and intricate superstructure to stand out more prominently, making it an impressive centerpiece for an office, study, display cabinet, or dedicated collection room. Ideal for Coast Guard veterans, maritime enthusiasts, polar exploration admirers, and serious collectors, the 36-inch version delivers enhanced realism and visual impact while remaining practical for most display spaces. It is the perfect choice for those seeking a substantial museum-quality model that captures the strength, resilience, and enduring legacy of America's premier heavy icebreaker.
Each piece is individually handcrafted, with production typically taking 3–6 months, depending on the model's size and complexity. Throughout the process, we'll keep you updated with detailed progress photos at every major milestone, allowing you to review the craftsmanship and approve each stage before we move forward.
You'll receive photos during:

History
Commissioned in 1976, USCGC Polar Star (WAGB-10) is the oldest active heavy icebreaker operated by the United States Coast Guard and one of the most powerful non-nuclear icebreakers ever built. Designed during the Cold War to maintain year-round access to polar regions, Polar Star was constructed specifically to break through some of the thickest sea ice on Earth while supporting scientific research, logistics, national security, and search and rescue missions. Measuring nearly 400 feet in length and powered by a combination of diesel-electric and gas turbine propulsion systems, the vessel is capable of breaking ice more than 20 feet thick through repeated backing and ramming.
For decades, Polar Star has served as the United States' primary heavy icebreaking platform, most notably supporting Operation Deep Freeze, the annual mission that resupplies research stations in Antarctica. In addition to enabling scientific exploration, the vessel has contributed to Arctic sovereignty patrols, environmental protection, humanitarian assistance, and international cooperation in polar waters. Despite its age, continuous modernization has allowed Polar Star to remain operational while the United States develops its next generation of Polar Security Cutters, ensuring its continued importance in safeguarding American interests in the rapidly changing polar regions.
