History
Launched in 1923, the Columbia was a legendary racing schooner designed by W.A. Starling Burgess and built in Essex, Massachusetts. Constructed as a direct challenge to the supremacy of Canadian fishing vessels, she was built of solid oak and designed for raw speed in the rugged waters of the North Atlantic. Her sleek lines and massive sail plan made her one of the fastest schooners of her time, representing the height of the Gloucester fishing fleet's competitive spirit. During her short but illustrious career, she participated in the famous International Fishermen’s Races, embodying the fierce rivalry and maritime expertise that defined the era of the great racing schooners.

The Columbia met a tragic end in 1927 when she was lost during a violent gale off the coast of Nova Scotia, taking her entire crew with her. For decades, she remained a ghost of maritime lore, a symbol of the immense risks faced by those who challenged the sea for both profit and glory. However, her legacy was revived in 2014 with the construction of a faithful, full-scale replica. This new vessel honors the original's engineering and history, allowing modern sailors to experience the majesty of the original Columbia.
