SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse Ocean Liner – 30-Inch Handcrafted Wooden Model
Own a handcrafted model of the SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse, one of the most revolutionary ocean liners of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Launched in 1897 for the North German Lloyd (Norddeutscher Lloyd), she was the first German ocean liner to capture the prestigious Blue Riband for the fastest transatlantic crossing, signaling Germany's emergence as a world leader in passenger ship design. Renowned for her luxurious accommodations, four-funnel silhouette, and exceptional speed, the SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse ushered in a new era of ocean liner competition. At the outbreak of World War I, she was converted into an auxiliary cruiser before being lost in battle in 1914, securing her place as one of the most iconic ships in maritime history.
Our 30-inch handcrafted SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse Ocean Liner model faithfully captures the distinctive appearance of this legendary vessel. Each model is individually built by experienced craftsmen using the traditional plank-on-frame construction method—the same principle used in real wooden shipbuilding. We select only premium hardwoods, including Western Red Cedar, Teak, and Mahogany, ensuring exceptional durability, refined craftsmanship, and a timeless museum-quality finish.
Every element is carefully recreated, from the gracefully proportioned hull and iconic four funnels to the elegant superstructure, promenade decks, lifeboats, masts, cargo booms, ventilators, railings, and other signature features that define the SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse. Rather than being mass-produced, each model is handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail, resulting in a stunning display piece worthy of any maritime, ocean liner, or historic steamship collection.
The 30-inch model offers the perfect balance of craftsmanship, practicality, and value. Large enough to showcase the SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse's intricate details yet compact enough to fit comfortably on bookshelves, office desks, display cabinets, or mantels, it is an ideal choice for both home and office display. Its convenient size also makes it more affordable than larger models, easier to ship worldwide, and a thoughtful gift for ocean liner enthusiasts, maritime historians, collectors, or anyone who appreciates the grandeur of the Golden Age of Transatlantic Travel.
Each piece is individually handcrafted, and production typically takes 3–6 months, depending on the model's size and complexity. Throughout the process, we'll keep you updated with detailed progress photos at every major milestone, allowing you to review the craftsmanship and approve each stage before we move forward.
You'll receive photos during:

History
SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse was a revolutionary German ocean liner built by the Stettiner Vulcan shipyard for the North German Lloyd company. Launched in 1897 and entering service that same year, she transformed the world of transatlantic travel with her unprecedented size, speed, and luxury. Named in honor of German Emperor Wilhelm I, the ship was designed to challenge British dominance of the Atlantic passenger trade. With elegant interiors, advanced quadruple-expansion steam engines, and a top speed that allowed her to capture the prestigious Blue Riband for the fastest Atlantic crossing, Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse became a symbol of Germany's growing industrial and maritime power.
During her early years, the liner operated between Bremerhaven and New York, carrying wealthy travelers, immigrants, mail, and valuable cargo across the Atlantic. Her success inspired the construction of additional German superliners and began a new era of competition among European shipping companies. During the First World War, Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse was converted into an auxiliary cruiser for the Imperial German Navy, attacking enemy merchant ships before being forced to seek refuge in neutral waters. In 1914, she was scuttled off the coast of Spanish Sahara to avoid capture by British forces. Although her career was relatively short, SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse left a lasting legacy as the first true ocean liner of the modern age, marking the beginning of the great rivalry for Atlantic supremacy.
