SS Vaterland was one of the largest and most luxurious ocean liners ever built before the First World War. Constructed by Blohm & Voss in Hamburg for the Hamburg America Line, she was launched in 1911 and entered service in 1913 as the flagship of the German merchant fleet. Designed to compete with Britain's largest liners, Vaterland featured grand interiors, spacious public rooms, and advanced engineering that made her one of the most impressive ships of the early twentieth century. With capacity for thousands of passengers and crew, she operated on the prestigious Hamburg–New York route, representing Germany's ambition to dominate international ocean travel.

The outbreak of the First World War dramatically changed Vaterland's fate. While docked in New York in 1914, she was seized by the United States after America entered the war in 1917 and was renamed SS Leviathan. Converted into a troopship, she transported more than 100,000 American soldiers to Europe during the conflict. After the war, Leviathan returned to civilian service under the United States Lines, becoming the largest passenger liner in the American merchant fleet and a symbol of national pride. However, the Great Depression and changing travel patterns reduced her profitability, and she was retired in 1933 before being scrapped in 1938. SS Vaterland remains remembered as a remarkable example of prewar shipbuilding, reflecting both the elegance of the ocean liner era and the dramatic political changes of the twentieth century.
