SS Pennsylvania was a large transatlantic passenger liner built for the Hamburg America Line (HAPAG) during the height of European migration to North America. Constructed by Harland & Wolff in Belfast, she was launched in 1896 and entered service later that year on the busy Hamburg–New York route. Designed to carry thousands of passengers in first, second, and especially steerage class, Pennsylvania played an important role in transporting immigrants seeking new opportunities in the United States. Equipped with twin-screw steam engines and modern accommodations for her era, she earned a reputation as a dependable and efficient liner, reflecting Germany's growing influence in international passenger shipping at the end of the nineteenth century.
