Description

USS Kirk Destroyer Escort – 30-Inch Handcrafted Wooden Model

Own a handcrafted model of the USS Kirk, a distinguished U.S. Navy destroyer escort renowned for her courageous service during the Vietnam War and one of the most remarkable humanitarian missions in modern naval history. Commissioned in 1972 as a Knox-class frigate (originally classified as a destroyer escort under the U.S. Navy's former designation system), USS Kirk served as an anti-submarine warfare escort before earning lasting recognition for Operation Frequent Wind in 1975. During the evacuation of Saigon, the ship rescued thousands of South Vietnamese refugees and safely escorted numerous civilian vessels to freedom, cementing her legacy as a symbol of compassion, leadership, and naval professionalism.

Our 30-inch handcrafted USS Kirk Destroyer Escort model faithfully captures the distinctive appearance of this historic vessel. Each model is individually built by experienced craftsmen using the traditional plank-on-frame construction method—the same principle used in real wooden shipbuilding. We select only premium hardwoods, including Western Red Cedar, Teak, and Mahogany, ensuring exceptional durability, refined craftsmanship, and a timeless museum-quality finish.

Every element is carefully recreated, from the sleek hull and modern superstructure to the bridge, radar and communications masts, gun mount, helicopter flight deck, hangar, lifeboats, antennas, deck fittings, and other signature features that define the USS Kirk. Rather than being mass-produced, each model is handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail, resulting in a striking display piece worthy of any naval, military, or maritime collection.

The 30-inch model offers the perfect balance of craftsmanship, practicality, and value. Large enough to showcase the USS Kirk's intricate details yet compact enough to fit comfortably on bookshelves, office desks, display cabinets, or mantels, it is an ideal choice for both home and office display. Its convenient size also makes it more affordable than larger models, easier to ship worldwide, and a thoughtful gift for U.S. Navy veterans, active-duty service members, military collectors, or anyone who appreciates modern naval history.

Each piece is individually handcrafted, and production typically takes 3–6 months, depending on the model's size and complexity. Throughout the process, we'll keep you updated with detailed progress photos at every major milestone, allowing you to review the craftsmanship and approve each stage before we move forward.

You'll receive photos during:

- Hull construction
- Deck detailing and superstructure assembly
- Final painting and finishing

Your satisfaction comes first. We proceed to the next stage only after you've reviewed the previous one.

Secure Worldwide Delivery

Once you approve the completed model, it will be carefully packed in a custom-built wooden shipping crate with multiple layers of protective cushioning to ensure it arrives safely anywhere in the world.

History
USS Kirk (DE-1087) was a Knox-class destroyer escort, later redesignated as a frigate, built for the United States Navy during the Cold War. Commissioned in 1973, the ship was designed primarily for anti-submarine warfare, protecting aircraft carrier battle groups and merchant convoys from underwater threats. Equipped with advanced sonar, guided missiles, torpedoes, and helicopter support, USS Kirk represented a new generation of highly capable escort vessels. Throughout her early service, she participated in numerous training exercises and fleet operations across the Pacific, demonstrating the versatility and endurance expected of modern U.S. Navy warships.

USS Kirk earned lasting recognition in April 1975 during the final days of the Vietnam War. Assigned to Operation Frequent Wind and the evacuation of South Vietnam, the ship rescued thousands of Vietnamese refugees fleeing the collapse of Saigon. In one of the most remarkable humanitarian missions in naval history, Kirk's crew also guided South Vietnamese naval vessels to safety and helped recover numerous helicopters that landed aboard or near the ship. Their professionalism and compassion saved countless lives under extremely difficult conditions. After decades of distinguished service, USS Kirk was decommissioned in 1993. Today, she is remembered not only for her military capabilities but also for her extraordinary humanitarian legacy during one of the most dramatic evacuations of the twentieth century.
