History
RMS Celtic was the first of the famous "Big Four" ocean liners built for the White Star Line and, upon her launch in 1901, became the largest ship in the world by gross tonnage. Constructed by Harland & Wolff in Belfast, Celtic marked a shift in ocean travel by emphasizing passenger comfort, spacious accommodations, and economical operation rather than outright speed. Measuring over 700 feet in length, she offered luxurious first-class facilities while also carrying large numbers of second-class and third-class passengers, making transatlantic travel accessible to a wider range of travelers.

Throughout her career, RMS Celtic regularly crossed the North Atlantic between Liverpool and New York, earning a reputation for reliability and dependable service. During the First World War, she was requisitioned as a troopship, transporting thousands of Allied soldiers and military supplies across dangerous waters. Despite surviving collisions and submarine attacks, the liner continued serving with distinction throughout the conflict before returning to civilian passenger service after the war.

In December 1928, Celtic encountered severe weather off the coast of Ireland and ran aground near Cobh. Although all passengers and crew were safely evacuated, repeated salvage attempts proved unsuccessful, and the vessel was declared a total loss. Her wreck was gradually broken up on site. RMS Celtic remains an important milestone in maritime history, remembered for redefining luxury ocean travel and paving the way for later White Star giants, including the iconic Olympic-class liners.
