USS Carondelet was one of the famous City-class ironclad gunboats built for the Union Navy during the American Civil War. Constructed in 1861 at Mound City, Illinois, under the direction of renowned engineer James B. Eads, the vessel was designed for combat on the western rivers. Protected by sloped iron armor and armed with a powerful battery of heavy guns, USS Carondelet became an essential part of the Union's Mississippi River campaign.

The warship earned lasting recognition through its daring service in 1862. Under Captain Henry Walke, Carondelet successfully ran past Confederate batteries at Island No. 10 under the cover of darkness, allowing Union forces to capture one of the South's strongest river defenses.
