The R/V Falkor was a renowned oceanographic research vessel dedicated to advancing marine science through exploration and innovation. Originally built in 1981 in Germany as the fisheries protection vessel Seefalke, the ship later underwent an extensive conversion before entering service in 2013 as a state-of-the-art research vessel for the Schmidt Ocean Institute. Measuring 272 feet (83 m) in length, the R/V Falkor was equipped with advanced laboratories, dynamic positioning, multibeam sonar, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), and high-bandwidth communication systems. The vessel was designed to support multidisciplinary research, allowing scientists from around the world to study geology, biology, chemistry, ocean circulation, and deep-sea ecosystems.

During more than a decade of scientific service, the R/V Falkor completed hundreds of expeditions across the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Southern Oceans. Its missions led to the discovery of previously unknown seamounts, hydrothermal vents, coral reefs, and countless new marine species, while producing valuable data for climate and oceanographic research. A hallmark of the vessel was its commitment to open science, with expeditions frequently livestreamed and research data shared freely with the global scientific community. In 2023, the Falkor was succeeded by the larger and more advanced R/V Falkor (too), ensuring that its legacy of exploration, technological innovation, and international scientific collaboration continues into the future.
