Description
Own a handcrafted replica of one of America's most advanced oceanographic research vessels. The R/V Neil Armstrong represents the future of marine exploration and scientific discovery, supporting groundbreaking research across the world's oceans since its commissioning in 2015. Operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and named in honor of astronaut Neil Armstrong, this state-of-the-art research vessel enables scientists to study ocean conditions, climate change, marine ecosystems, and the seafloor through advanced technology and global expeditions.
Our 30-inch handcrafted R/V Neil Armstrong Research Vessel model faithfully captures the authentic appearance of the original vessel. Each model is individually built by experienced craftsmen using the traditional plank-on-frame construction method—the same principle used in authentic wooden shipbuilding. We select only premium hardwoods, including Western Red Cedar, Teak, and Mahogany, to ensure exceptional durability, fine craftsmanship, and a timeless finish.
Every element is carefully recreated, from the modern research superstructure and spacious working deck to the navigation bridge, stern A-frame, oceanographic cranes, winches, radar masts, communication antennas, and scientific equipment. Rather than being mass-produced, each R/V Neil Armstrong model is individually handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail, creating a museum-quality display piece worthy of any research vessel, scientific, or maritime collection.
One of the defining characteristics of the R/V Neil Armstrong is her highly specialized research capability, featuring a sophisticated working deck, advanced scientific equipment, and innovative systems designed for ocean exploration. This handcrafted wooden model beautifully recreates her sleek hull profile, modern bridge structure, stern A-frame, research cranes, deck machinery, and communication systems, capturing the innovation, precision, and engineering excellence of one of the world's premier oceanographic research vessels.
The 30-inch model offers the perfect balance of craftsmanship, practicality, and value. Large enough to showcase the R/V Neil Armstrong's detailed research equipment, working deck layout, scientific instruments, and modern vessel features, yet compact enough to fit comfortably on bookshelves, office desks, display cabinets, or mantels, it is an excellent choice for both home and office display. Its convenient size also makes it more affordable, easier to ship worldwide, and a meaningful gift for ocean researchers, maritime collectors, science enthusiasts, or anyone fascinated by exploration vessels.
Each piece is individually handcrafted, and production typically takes 3–6 months, depending on the model's size and complexity. Throughout the process, we'll keep you updated with detailed progress photos at every major milestone, allowing you to review the craftsmanship and approve each stage before we move forward.
You'll receive photos during:
Hull construction
Deck detailing and superstructure assembly
Final painting and finishing
Your satisfaction comes first. We proceed to the next stage only after you've reviewed the previous one.

The R/V Neil Armstrong is a state-of-the-art American oceanographic research vessel designed to support advanced scientific exploration around the world. Commissioned in 2015, the ship was built by Dakota Creek Industries in Anacortes, Washington, for the U.S. Navy's Office of Naval Research as part of the modern Neil Armstrong-class of research vessels. Operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the vessel is named in honor of Neil Armstrong, the first person to walk on the Moon, recognizing his lifelong commitment to science and exploration. Measuring 238 feet (72.5 m) in length, the ship is equipped with advanced laboratories, dynamic positioning technology, and sophisticated sonar and sampling systems, enabling scientists to conduct research in deep and coastal waters.
The R/V Neil Armstrong supports a wide range of scientific missions, including ocean circulation, marine geology, climate research, seafloor mapping, marine biology, and underwater robotics. Its flexible design allows the deployment of remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), and a variety of oceanographic instruments. Since entering service, the vessel has participated in numerous expeditions across the Atlantic Ocean and beyond, contributing valuable data that improves our understanding of Earth's oceans and climate. Today, the R/V Neil Armstrong stands as one of the world's leading research vessels, continuing a legacy of discovery, innovation, and international scientific collaboration.
