Description

Own a handcrafted replica of one of Alaska's most legendary state ferries. The Tustumena has served the Alaska Marine Highway System since 1964, connecting remote coastal communities across the Gulf of Alaska and the Aleutian Islands. Designed to navigate some of the world's most challenging waters, this remarkable vessel has become a lasting symbol of dependable transportation, maritime heritage, and the rugged spirit of Alaska's coastline.

Our 30-inch handcrafted Tustumena Ferry Model faithfully captures the authentic appearance of the original vessel. Each model is individually built by experienced craftsmen using the traditional plank-on-frame construction method—the same principle used in authentic wooden shipbuilding. We select only premium hardwoods, including Western Red Cedar, Teak, and Mahogany, to ensure exceptional durability, fine craftsmanship, and a timeless finish.

Every element is carefully recreated, from the distinctive superstructure and bridge to the lifeboats, vehicle deck, railings, funnels, mast, and detailed ferry equipment. Rather than being mass-produced, each Tustumena model is individually handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail, creating a museum-quality display piece worthy of any ferry, maritime, or Alaska heritage collection.

One of the defining characteristics of the Tustumena is her iconic blue-and-white livery, practical ferry design, and rugged construction built for Alaska's demanding coastal environment. This handcrafted wooden model beautifully recreates her accurately detailed bridge, spacious passenger decks, vehicle loading areas, lifeboats, deck equipment, and traditional ferry features, capturing the reliability, character, and enduring legacy of one of Alaska's most recognizable vessels.

The 30-inch model offers the perfect balance of craftsmanship, practicality, and value. Large enough to showcase the Tustumena's detailed superstructure, bridge design, passenger decks, vehicle deck features, and authentic ferry elements, yet compact enough to fit comfortably on bookshelves, office desks, display cabinets, or mantels, it is an excellent choice for both home and office display. Its convenient size also makes it more affordable, easier to ship worldwide, and a meaningful gift for ferry enthusiasts, maritime collectors, Alaska history lovers, or anyone passionate about historic working vessels.

Each piece is individually handcrafted, and production typically takes 3–6 months, depending on the model's size and complexity. Throughout the process, we'll keep you updated with detailed progress photos at every major milestone, allowing you to review the craftsmanship and approve each stage before we move forward.

You'll receive photos during:

- Hull construction
- Deck detailing and superstructure assembly
- Final painting and finishing

Your satisfaction comes first. We proceed to the next stage only after you've reviewed the previous one.

Secure Worldwide Delivery

Once you approve the completed model, it will be carefully packed in a custom-built wooden shipping crate with multiple layers of protective cushioning to ensure it arrives safely anywhere in the world.

History
The Tustumena is one of the most iconic vessels in the Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) and has faithfully served Alaska's coastal communities since 1964. Built by the Puget Sound Bridge and Dry Dock Company in Seattle, Washington, the ferry was designed specifically to operate in the demanding waters of the Gulf of Alaska. Measuring 296 feet (90.2 m) in length, she can carry hundreds of passengers and dozens of vehicles while providing a vital transportation link to communities that have no direct road access. Throughout her long career, the Tustumena has regularly served routes connecting Homer, Kodiak Island, the Alaska Peninsula, and the Aleutian region, delivering passengers, vehicles, freight, and essential supplies in all seasons.

Nicknamed "The Trusty Tusty," the ferry has earned a reputation for reliability, resilience, and dedicated service despite Alaska's harsh weather and rugged coastline. Over the decades, she has undergone numerous upgrades to enhance safety, navigation, and passenger comfort while maintaining her proven design. For generations of Alaskans, the Tustumena has been far more than a ferry—it has been a lifeline supporting local economies, tourism, and everyday life. Today, she remains a cherished symbol of Alaska's maritime heritage and the enduring importance of the Alaska Marine Highway System.
