Description

Own a handcrafted replica of one of Alaska's most iconic historic ferries. The Matanuska was commissioned in 1963 to serve the challenging and icy waters of the North Pacific as part of the Alaska Marine Highway system. For decades, this remarkable vessel played a vital role in connecting remote coastal communities, carrying passengers, vehicles, and essential supplies while becoming a lasting symbol of Alaska's maritime heritage and resilient spirit.

Our 30-inch handcrafted Matanuska model faithfully captures the authentic appearance of the original ferry. Each model is individually built by experienced craftsmen using the traditional plank-on-frame construction method—the same principle used in authentic wooden shipbuilding. We select only premium hardwoods, including Western Red Cedar, Teak, and Mahogany, to ensure exceptional durability, fine craftsmanship, and a timeless finish.

Every element is carefully recreated, from the distinctive car deck doors and bridge windows to the elegant hull lines, multi-level superstructure, deck fittings, mast, and classic ferry equipment. Rather than being mass-produced, each Matanuska model is individually handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail, creating a museum-quality display piece worthy of any ferry, maritime, or historical vessel collection.

One of the defining characteristics of the Matanuska is her practical yet elegant ferry design, featuring a distinctive multi-level superstructure, vehicle loading areas, classic bridge structure, and functional deck layout built for Alaska's demanding coastal environment. This handcrafted wooden model beautifully recreates her graceful hull profile, traditional ferry details, and iconic features, capturing the reliability, character, and historic importance of one of Alaska's most recognizable vessels.

The 30-inch model offers the perfect balance of craftsmanship, practicality, and value. Large enough to showcase the Matanuska's detailed superstructure, car deck features, bridge design, and authentic ferry elements, yet compact enough to fit comfortably on bookshelves, office desks, display cabinets, or mantels, it is an excellent choice for both home and office display. Its convenient size also makes it more affordable, easier to ship worldwide, and a meaningful gift for ferry enthusiasts, maritime collectors, Alaska history lovers, or anyone passionate about historic working vessels.

Each piece is individually handcrafted, and production typically takes 3–6 months, depending on the model's size and complexity. Throughout the process, we'll keep you updated with detailed progress photos at every major milestone, allowing you to review the craftsmanship and approve each stage before we move forward.

You'll receive photos during:

Hull construction
Deck detailing and superstructure assembly
Final painting and finishing

Your satisfaction comes first. We proceed to the next stage only after you've reviewed the previous one.

The Matanuska is a historic Alaska state ferry that has served coastal communities for more than six decades. Built in 1963 by the Puget Sound Bridge and Dry Dock Company in Seattle, Washington, she was one of the first major vessels constructed for the Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS), helping establish a dependable transportation network after Alaska became a state in 1959. Designed to withstand the challenging waters and harsh weather of the Gulf of Alaska, the ferry measures 408 feet (124.4 m) in length and can carry hundreds of passengers along with more than 80 vehicles. Throughout her career, the Matanuska has connected ports including Ketchikan, Juneau, Haines, Skagway, Valdez, Kodiak, and the Aleutian Islands, providing an essential lifeline for residents, businesses, and visitors where road access is limited.

Over the years, the vessel has undergone several major upgrades to improve safety, passenger comfort, and reliability while preserving her classic profile. Generations of Alaskans have relied on the Matanuska for transportation, commerce, and tourism, making her one of the most recognizable ferries in the state fleet. After decades of dependable service, she remains an enduring symbol of Alaska's maritime heritage and the vital role the Alaska Marine Highway continues to play in connecting remote coastal communities.
