The USNS Bob Hope (T-AKR-300) is the historic lead ship of her class of large, medium-speed roll-on/roll-off (LMSR) vehicle cargo ships, built to provide the U.S. military with unprecedented global surge sealift capabilities. Named in honor of the legendary comedian Bob Hope for his five decades of unwavering support and entertainment for American troops worldwide, her construction began on May 29, 1995, at Avondale Industries in New Orleans, Louisiana. She was launched on March 27, 1997, and delivered to the Military Sealift Command on November 18, 1998.

Measuring an immense 951 feet in length with a massive steel hull, the USNS Bob Hope offers over 380,000 square feet of internal deck space, custom-tailored to carry massive fleets of tanks, combat vehicles, and helicopters. The ship proved its immense logistical worth during its first major deployment in June 1999, rapidly transporting heavy combat equipment to the Balkans to support NATO operations in Kosovo, and later delivering over 38,000 tons of gear during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003.
