History
The USNS Dahl (T-AKR-312) is a vital asset within the Military Sealift Command’s strategic prepositioning program, built to project American military might across the globe. Named in honor of Army Specialist 4th Class Larry G. Dahl, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for sacrificing his life to shield his comrades from a grenade during the Vietnam War in 1971, the ship's construction began on November 12, 1997. Also built by NASSCO in San Diego, this Watson-class vehicle cargo ship was launched on October 2, 1998, and officially entered active non-commissioned service with the Military Sealift Command on July 13, 1999.

Measuring 951 feet in length and displacing approximately 62,970 tons at full load, the USNS Dahl is designed to transport more than 900 military vehicles, including heavy M1 Abrams tanks and armored personnel carriers. Operating primarily in the Pacific Ocean under Afloat Prepositioning Ship Squadron Four, the gas-turbine-powered vessel provides a continuous, forward-deployed line of logistics.
