MV Freedom Star was originally built in 1981 as one of NASA's two solid rocket booster recovery ships supporting the Space Shuttle Program. Operated by United Space Alliance and later managed under NASA contracts, the vessel was specially modified to recover reusable solid rocket boosters after each Space Shuttle launch. Following splashdown in the Atlantic Ocean, Freedom Star towed the recovered boosters back to Cape Canaveral for refurbishment and reuse, making it an essential part of NASA's launch operations for nearly three decades.

Following the retirement of the Space Shuttle Program in 2011, Freedom Star was reassigned to support scientific research, testing, and other government missions.
