Description

Own a handcrafted replica of one of NASA's most iconic support vessels. For nearly three decades, MV Freedom Star served as one of NASA's dedicated solid rocket booster recovery ships, playing a vital role in the historic Space Shuttle Program. After every shuttle launch, the vessel recovered spent solid rocket boosters from the Atlantic Ocean and towed them back to port for refurbishment and reuse. Following the retirement of the Space Shuttle Program, Freedom Star continued supporting scientific research and government missions, preserving its legacy as a remarkable vessel in both maritime and aerospace history.

Our 30-inch handcrafted MV Freedom Star model faithfully captures the distinctive appearance of the original vessel. Each model is individually built by experienced craftsmen using the traditional plank-on-frame construction method—the same principle used in authentic wooden shipbuilding. We select only premium hardwoods, including Western Red Cedar, Teak, and Mahogany, to ensure exceptional durability, fine craftsmanship, and a timeless finish.

Every element is carefully recreated, from the spacious working deck and bridge structure to the booster recovery equipment, towing gear, deck cranes, recovery systems, and other signature features that made Freedom Star an indispensable part of NASA's Space Shuttle operations. Rather than being mass-produced, each model is individually handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail, creating a museum-quality display piece worthy of any maritime, aerospace, or NASA collection.

The 30-inch model offers the perfect balance of craftsmanship, practicality, and value. Large enough to showcase MV Freedom Star's distinctive booster recovery systems and intricate deck details, yet compact enough to fit comfortably on bookshelves, office desks, display cabinets, or mantels, it is an excellent choice for both home and office display. Its convenient size also makes it more affordable than larger models, easier to ship worldwide, and a meaningful gift for NASA enthusiasts, maritime collectors, aerospace professionals, or anyone fascinated by the history of space exploration.

Each piece is individually handcrafted, and production typically takes 3–6 months, depending on the model's size and complexity. Throughout the process, we'll keep you updated with detailed progress photos at every major milestone, allowing you to review the craftsmanship and approve each stage before we move forward.

You'll receive photos during:

Hull construction
Deck detailing and superstructure assembly
Final painting and finishing

Your satisfaction comes first. We proceed to the next stage only after you've reviewed the previous one.

Secure Worldwide Delivery

Once you approve the completed model, it will be carefully packed in a custom-built wooden shipping crate with multiple layers of protective cushioning to ensure it arrives safely anywhere in the world.

MV Freedom Star was originally built in 1981 as one of NASA's two solid rocket booster recovery ships supporting the Space Shuttle Program. Operated by United Space Alliance and later managed under NASA contracts, the vessel was specially modified to recover reusable solid rocket boosters after each Space Shuttle launch. Following splashdown in the Atlantic Ocean, Freedom Star towed the recovered boosters back to Cape Canaveral for refurbishment and reuse, making it an essential part of NASA's launch operations for nearly three decades.

Following the retirement of the Space Shuttle Program in 2011, Freedom Star was reassigned to support scientific research, testing, and other government missions. During its distinguished career, the vessel participated in every Space Shuttle mission, contributing significantly to one of the most successful space exploration programs in history. Today, Freedom Star remains an iconic vessel closely associated with NASA's achievements in human spaceflight.
