Commissioned in 1968, NOAA Ship Rainier (S 221) is one of NOAA's longest-serving hydrographic survey vessels and has spent decades improving the safety of navigation in U.S. coastal waters. Named after Mount Rainier in Washington State, the ship was specifically designed to conduct hydrographic surveys, seabed mapping, and shoreline investigations, primarily throughout Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. Following extensive modernization in the 1990s, Rainier was upgraded with advanced sonar, positioning systems, and survey technology that significantly enhanced its scientific capabilities.
Today, Rainier continues to play a vital role in updating nautical charts used by commercial shipping, fishing fleets, cruise vessels, and recreational mariners. Operating multiple survey launches equipped with sophisticated multibeam sonar, the vessel collects highly accurate bathymetric data that improves maritime safety and supports coastal management. Its long service history and continuous contributions to hydrographic science have made Rainier one of NOAA's most respected and productive research vessels.
