Commissioned in 2005, NOAA Ship Oscar Dyson (R 224) is one of NOAA's premier fisheries survey vessels operating primarily in the waters surrounding Alaska. Named after Oscar Dyson, a respected fisheries biologist, the vessel was designed to study one of the world's richest marine ecosystems while supporting sustainable management of commercially valuable fish stocks.
Oscar Dyson conducts acoustic surveys, trawl sampling, oceanographic research, and ecosystem monitoring throughout the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska. The vessel plays a crucial role in assessing populations of pollock, cod, salmon, and other important species that support both the U.S. fishing industry and global seafood markets. Its scientific findings provide the foundation for responsible fisheries management and marine conservation.
