Our 30-inch handcrafted Polar Sea model is individually built using the traditional plank-on-frame construction method, preserving the authenticity of classic wooden shipbuilding. History
Commissioned in 1978, USCGC Polar Sea (WAGB-11) was built as the sister ship of Polar Star and served for decades as one of the United States Coast Guard's two heavy polar icebreakers. Designed to operate in both Arctic and Antarctic environments, the vessel combined tremendous icebreaking capability with long-range endurance, allowing it to support scientific expeditions, military operations, search and rescue missions, and logistics in some of the harshest environments on Earth. Like its sister ship, Polar Sea utilized a powerful diesel-electric and gas turbine propulsion system capable of generating enormous power for continuous heavy icebreaking.

Throughout its distinguished career, Polar Sea participated in numerous scientific and military operations, including annual Antarctic resupply missions and Arctic research expeditions. The vessel also played a key role in strengthening U.S. presence in polar regions during periods of increasing international interest in Arctic navigation and natural resources. Although major engine failures led to the ship being placed in inactive status in 2010, Polar Sea remains an important symbol of American polar operations and has significantly influenced the design and development of future U.S. icebreaking capabilities.
