The American MacGregor 65 is a bold and unique sailing yacht that challenges traditional cruising norms with its sleek lines, lightweight construction, and impressive speed potential. Designed by Roger MacGregor and introduced in the mid-1980s, the American MacGregor 65 stands out as one of the longest production sailboats ever built in the United States.
At 65 feet in length, the yacht was conceived to be both fast and affordable, intended for long-distance voyaging. With a narrow beam, minimal wetted surface, and relatively light displacement for her size, the American MacGregor 65 is capable of remarkable speeds under sail, with documented passages averaging over 200 miles per day. She was often advertised as being able to outrun storms—a rare claim for a cruising vessel.
The construction features a solid fiberglass hull and a water-ballasted keel system, which helps reduce weight during transport. Many of the yachts were built to be easily shipped via truck or container, offering a unique advantage for global cruisers.
The interior varies between models and customizations but typically includes generous accommodations for six to eight people, a large salon, galley, navigation station, and multiple heads. Though the interior finish is more functional than luxurious, it’s practical and well-suited for extended offshore cruising.
The American MacGregor 65 had a relatively short production run, ending in the early 1990s, but it left a lasting impression as a fast, capable cruiser with a cult following. It remains popular among adventurous sailors who appreciate speed, simplicity, and a distinctive design ethos.
