Description

SS Pennsylvania (1896) Ocean Liner – 36-Inch Handcrafted Wooden Model

Own a handcrafted replica of one of the distinguished transatlantic ocean liners of the late nineteenth century. Launched in 1896 for the American Line, the SS Pennsylvania was built to provide reliable passenger and mail service between the United States and Europe during a period of rapid growth in international travel and immigration. Combining modern steamship engineering with elegant accommodations, the vessel carried thousands of passengers across the Atlantic while contributing to the flourishing maritime trade of its era. As one of the American Line's notable liners, the SS Pennsylvania remains a lasting symbol of maritime innovation and the golden age of transatlantic travel.

Our 36-inch handcrafted SS Pennsylvania (1896) Ocean Liner model faithfully captures the distinctive appearance of the original vessel. Each model is individually built by experienced craftsmen using the traditional plank-on-frame construction method—the same principle used in real wooden shipbuilding. We select only premium hardwoods, including Western Red Cedar, Teak, and Mahogany, to ensure exceptional durability, refined craftsmanship, and a timeless museum-quality finish.

Every element is carefully recreated, from the ship's graceful black hull and elegant white superstructure to its twin funnels, navigation bridge, promenade decks, lifeboats, cargo booms, masts, deck fittings, and other signature features that defined this classic steam-powered ocean liner. Rather than being mass-produced, each model is handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail, resulting in a display piece worthy of any maritime, historical, or nautical collection.

The 36-inch model offers a larger, more commanding display while showcasing an even greater level of craftsmanship and detail. Its increased size allows the SS Pennsylvania's elegant silhouette, authentic deck arrangement, and classic steamship features to stand out more prominently, making it an impressive centerpiece for an office, study, library, display cabinet, or dedicated collection room. Ideal for ocean liner enthusiasts, maritime historians, collectors, and admirers of classic passenger ships, the 36-inch version provides a stronger visual presence and enhanced realism while remaining practical enough for most display spaces. It is the perfect choice for those seeking a substantial museum-quality replica that celebrates one of the notable ocean liners of the late Victorian era.

Each piece is individually handcrafted, and production typically takes 3–6 months, depending on the model's size and complexity. Throughout the process, we'll keep you updated with detailed progress photos at every major milestone, allowing you to review the craftsmanship and approve each stage before we move forward.

You'll receive photos during:

- Hull construction
- Deck detailing and superstructure assembly
- Final painting and finishing

Your satisfaction comes first. We proceed to the next stage only after you've reviewed the previous one.

Secure Worldwide Delivery

Once you approve the completed model, it will be carefully packed in a custom-built wooden shipping crate with multiple layers of protective cushioning to ensure it arrives safely anywhere in the world.

History
The SS Pennsylvania was a large transatlantic passenger liner constructed for the Hamburg America Line (HAPAG) during the height of European migration to North America. Built by Harland & Wolff in Belfast, she was launched in 1896 and entered service later that year on the busy Hamburg–New York route. Engineered to accommodate thousands of passengers across first, second, and steerage classes, the Pennsylvania played a vital role in transporting immigrants seeking new opportunities in the United States. Equipped with twin-screw steam engines and modern amenities for her era, she quickly earned a reputation as a dependable and efficient vessel, reflecting Germany's rapidly expanding influence in international passenger shipping at the close of the 19th century.

Throughout her career, the SS Pennsylvania completed numerous Atlantic crossings, facilitating the transit of immigrants, tourists, mail, and commercial cargo between Europe and North America. Her service came to an abrupt end during the First World War as shifting political landscapes disrupted global maritime commerce. In 1917, while operating under German control, she was accidentally rammed by the German submarine U-87 in the North Sea and subsequently foundered. Although often overshadowed by the more celebrated superliners of her time, the Pennsylvania made a significant contribution to the era of mass migration by transporting countless individuals across the Atlantic. Today, she is remembered as a meaningful vessel in the history of the Hamburg America Line and as a key participant in the remarkable age of transatlantic steamship travel.
