Description

Wilma Lee Skipjack – 30-Inch Handcrafted Wooden Model

Own a handcrafted model of one of the Chesapeake Bay's most treasured sailing vessels. The Wilma Lee Skipjack was built in 1940 in Dorchester County, Maryland, during the final years of the Chesapeake Bay's commercial skipjack era. Designed for oyster dredging, she faithfully served the hardworking watermen of the Bay before being carefully preserved as a living symbol of America's maritime heritage. Today, the Wilma Lee continues to educate and inspire visitors through public sailing programs, showcasing the craftsmanship and traditions that defined generations of Chesapeake Bay sailors.

Our 30-inch handcrafted Wilma Lee Skipjack model faithfully captures the timeless beauty and authentic character of the original vessel. Each model is individually built by experienced craftsmen using the traditional plank-on-frame construction method—the same principle used in real wooden shipbuilding. We select only premium hardwoods, including Western Red Cedar, Teak, and Mahogany, to ensure exceptional durability, fine detail, and a timeless finish.

Every element is carefully recreated, from the gracefully shaped wooden hull and spacious working deck to the tall mast, traditional skipjack rigging, long boom, bowsprit, wheelhouse, oyster dredging equipment, and other signature features that define this historic Chesapeake Bay vessel. Rather than being mass-produced, each model is handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail, resulting in a display piece worthy of any maritime, sailing, or historical ship collection.

The 30-inch model offers the perfect balance of craftsmanship, practicality, and value. Large enough to showcase the skipjack's intricate details yet compact enough to fit comfortably on bookshelves, office desks, display cabinets, or mantels, it is an ideal choice for both home and office display. Its convenient size also makes it more affordable than larger models, easier to ship worldwide, and a thoughtful gift for sailing enthusiasts, collectors, historians, or anyone who appreciates America's traditional working boats.

Each piece is individually handcrafted, with production typically taking 3–6 months, depending on the model's size and complexity. Throughout the process, we'll provide detailed progress photos at every major milestone, allowing you to review the craftsmanship and approve each stage before work continues.

You'll receive photos during:

- Hull construction
- Deck detailing, mast installation, and rigging assembly
- Final painting and finishing

Your satisfaction comes first. We proceed to the next stage only after you've reviewed the previous one.

Secure Worldwide Delivery

Once you approve the completed model, it will be carefully packed in a custom-built wooden shipping crate with multiple layers of protective cushioning to ensure it arrives safely anywhere in the world.

History
Launched in 1940 by the renowned boatbuilder Bronza Parks in Wingate, Maryland, the Wilma Lee is a classic Chesapeake Bay skipjack. Designed for the intensive oyster dredging season, she features the signature shallow-draft, V-bottom wooden hull that allowed her to glide over the bay's productive oyster bars while catching the light winds typical of the region. For decades, the Wilma Lee served as a vital part of the commercial fleet, contributing significantly to the local economy while embodying the traditional, sail-powered methods of harvesting that defined the bay for generations. Her construction represents a later era of skipjack production, incorporating the proven engineering of her predecessors while benefiting from improved materials and refined craftsmanship.

Following a long career as a commercial harvester, the Wilma Lee faced the common fate of aging wooden vessels, suffering from significant neglect and deterioration. However, her historical value led to a comprehensive restoration effort in the 21st century, which meticulously returned her to her former glory. Today, based at the Chesapeake Maritime Museum, she operates as a restored educational vessel, offering the public a firsthand look at the historic practice of oyster dredging and the unique maritime culture of the Eastern Shore. The Wilma Lee now stands as a beautifully maintained cultural ambassador, bridging the gap between the mid-20th-century working fleet and contemporary efforts to preserve the Chesapeake Bay’s rich and storied sailing heritage.
