History
The SS Great Western was a pioneering steamship designed by the renowned British engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel for the Great Western Steamship Company. Launched in 1837 at Bristol, England, she was built specifically for regular transatlantic passenger service between Britain and New York. At 236 feet (72 meters) in length, the vessel was the largest passenger ship of her time and demonstrated that steam-powered ships could successfully make long ocean voyages without relying on sails. Powered by side paddle wheels driven by powerful steam engines, the Great Western completed her maiden voyage to New York in 1838, crossing the Atlantic in just over fifteen days and setting a new standard for speed, comfort, and reliability.

Throughout her career, the SS Great Western operated successfully on the North Atlantic route, carrying passengers, mail, and cargo while proving the commercial viability of scheduled steamship services.
