Description
Own a handcrafted replica of one of the largest and most capable vessels in the Alaska Marine Highway System. The Kennicott was commissioned in 1998 to provide year-round transportation across Alaska's rugged coastal waters, serving as a vital connection for remote communities throughout the Inside Passage and Gulf of Alaska. Designed to operate in some of North America's most challenging marine environments, this remarkable ferry represents strength, reliability, and the modern evolution of Alaska's maritime transportation heritage.
Our 30-inch handcrafted Kennicott Ferry model faithfully captures the authentic appearance of the original vessel. Each model is individually built by experienced craftsmen using the traditional plank-on-frame construction method—the same principle used in authentic wooden shipbuilding. We select only premium hardwoods, including Western Red Cedar, Teak, and Mahogany, to ensure exceptional durability, fine craftsmanship, and a timeless finish.
Every element is carefully recreated, from the distinctive multi-deck superstructure and spacious vehicle decks to the navigation bridge, lifeboats, radar masts, communication equipment, and detailed deck fittings. Rather than being mass-produced, each Kennicott model is individually handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail, creating a museum-quality display piece worthy of any ferry, maritime, or Alaska heritage collection.
One of the defining characteristics of the Kennicott is her impressive modern ferry design, featuring a large passenger superstructure, signature bow loading door, vehicle ramps, communication systems, and functional deck layout built for demanding coastal operations. This handcrafted wooden model beautifully recreates her strong hull profile, multi-level decks, navigation equipment, and authentic ferry details, capturing the power, practicality, and modern elegance of one of Alaska's most important vessels.
The 30-inch model offers the perfect balance of craftsmanship, practicality, and value. Large enough to showcase the Kennicott's detailed superstructure, vehicle decks, bridge design, radar masts, and authentic ferry features, yet compact enough to fit comfortably on bookshelves, office desks, display cabinets, or mantels, it is an excellent choice for both home and office display. Its convenient size also makes it more affordable, easier to ship worldwide, and a meaningful gift for ferry enthusiasts, maritime collectors, Alaska history lovers, or anyone passionate about modern working vessels.
Each piece is individually handcrafted, and production typically takes 3–6 months, depending on the model's size and complexity. Throughout the process, we'll keep you updated with detailed progress photos at every major milestone, allowing you to review the craftsmanship and approve each stage before we move forward.

History
The Kennicott is one of the largest and most capable vessels in the Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS), built to provide dependable transportation across Alaska's vast coastal waters. Constructed in 1998 by Halter Marine Group in Gulfport, Mississippi, the ferry was designed for long-distance service through the often challenging conditions of the Gulf of Alaska. Measuring 382 feet (116.4 m) in length, the Kennicott can carry hundreds of passengers along with more than 100 vehicles, making it a vital link for communities that rely on marine transportation. Named after the historic mining town of Kennicott, Alaska, the vessel serves routes connecting Southeast Alaska with Southcentral Alaska, including ports such as Ketchikan, Juneau, Yakutat, Whittier, and occasionally the Aleutian chain.
Designed with modern navigation systems, stabilizers, and comfortable passenger accommodations, the Kennicott supports both residents and tourists traveling through some of North America's most spectacular coastal scenery. Over the years, she has become known for her reliability and versatility, transporting people, freight, and essential supplies to remote communities where road access is unavailable. Today, the Kennicott continues to play a crucial role in Alaska's transportation network, representing the state's commitment to connecting its coastal communities while preserving a proud maritime tradition.
