USCGC Polar Star (WAGB-10) – 30-Inch Handcrafted Wooden Model
Own a handcrafted replica of the United States Coast Guard's most powerful heavy polar icebreaker. Commissioned in 1976, USCGC Polar Star (WAGB-10) has spent decades operating in some of the harshest environments on Earth, supporting scientific research, national security missions, search and rescue operations, and the annual resupply of Antarctic research stations. Built to break through massive sheets of sea ice, Polar Star remains an enduring symbol of American leadership in polar exploration.
Our 30-inch handcrafted USCGC Polar Star model faithfully captures the vessel's commanding profile and remarkable engineering. Every model is individually handcrafted by experienced artisans using the traditional plank-on-frame construction method—the same principle used in authentic wooden shipbuilding. Premium hardwoods including Western Red Cedar, Teak, and Mahogany are carefully selected to create a museum-quality model with exceptional durability and elegant craftsmanship.
Every detail is meticulously recreated, from the heavily reinforced icebreaking bow and expansive working deck to the bridge, cranes, radar masts, helicopter landing area, lifeboats, and deck equipment. Rather than being mass-produced, each model is individually built by hand, giving every piece its own unique character and outstanding level of precision.
Designed to operate in the world's most extreme polar conditions, Polar Star can continuously break through ice more than six feet thick while maintaining forward movement. Its enormous power, advanced navigation systems, and proven reliability have made it one of the world's most respected icebreakers. This handcrafted replica celebrates both the engineering achievement and the historic service of this legendary vessel.
The 30-inch version offers an ideal display size for collectors, military enthusiasts, and maritime historians. Large enough to showcase intricate structural details while compact enough for bookshelves, offices, display cabinets, or museums, it creates an impressive focal point without requiring excessive space.

History
Commissioned in 1976, USCGC Polar Star (WAGB-10) is the oldest active heavy icebreaker operated by the United States Coast Guard and one of the most powerful non-nuclear icebreakers ever built. Designed during the Cold War to maintain year-round access to polar regions, Polar Star was constructed specifically to break through some of the thickest sea ice on Earth while supporting scientific research, logistics, national security, and search and rescue missions. Measuring nearly 400 feet in length and powered by a combination of diesel-electric and gas turbine propulsion systems, the vessel is capable of breaking ice more than 20 feet thick through repeated backing and ramming.
For decades, Polar Star has served as the United States' primary heavy icebreaking platform, most notably supporting Operation Deep Freeze, the annual mission that resupplies research stations in Antarctica. In addition to enabling scientific exploration, the vessel has contributed to Arctic sovereignty patrols, environmental protection, humanitarian assistance, and international cooperation in polar waters. Despite its age, continuous modernization has allowed Polar Star to remain operational while the United States develops its next generation of Polar Security Cutters, ensuring its continued importance in safeguarding American interests in the rapidly changing polar regions.
