Though completed too late to see major action in that war, she served actively during the interwar period and was modernized in the 1930s with improved armor, fire control systems, and aircraft facilities to extend her combat effectiveness. At the start of World War II, HMS Repulse participated in convoy escorts and patrols, later joining Force Z alongside the battleship Prince of Wales to deter Japanese expansion in Southeast Asia. In December 1941, both ships were sent to intercept Japanese landings in Malaya without air cover. On December 10, 1941, HMS Repulse was attacked by Japanese land-based aircraft and sunk off the coast of Malaya. Her loss, along with Prince of Wales, marked the end of the era for battleships operating without air support and signaled the rising dominance of air power in naval warfare.
