She was a unique design, built under treaty limitations to be smaller and lighter than her predecessors while still carrying a sizable air wing. Despite her compromises, Wasp quickly became an important asset in the early stages of the war. In 1942, Wasp (CV-7) played a key role in ferrying aircraft to the embattled island of Malta and later supported the Allied invasion of Guadalcanal in the Pacific Theater. Her aircraft provided crucial air cover during the initial landings and naval engagements. However, she lacked adequate armor protection compared to later carriers. On September 15, 1942, USS Wasp (CV-7) was struck by torpedoes from the Japanese submarine I-19 and suffered massive fires and explosions. She was abandoned and later scuttled. Her loss was a significant blow during a critical phase of the Pacific War.
